Steve Crabb – his Personal Story
I am the eldest son of a family of four brothers, I grew up in a happy family home where we didn’t have much in the way of material things but we had each other and were happy by most standards. I grew up knowing that we didn’t have much money and so for me in my early years the pursuit of money was important. At school I used to earn more money then most adults did, I had 2 paper rounds, collected the pools for 2 different pools companies I had an evening job and a Saturday. I learnt early on that hard work paid well and even if we aren’t the smartest we can do well with effort and commitment.
After leaving university I had the opportunity to work with my Uncle who had a demolitions business; so my hard worked for Geography skills and qualifications were used in the dismantling of bridges, shopping centre’s and grandstands. I became an expert in reverse engineering. I worked to build the business up so that within 5 years we were the largest company of its kind in the UK and in the 1980’s we had a turnover in excess of £4 million which in the 80’s was a lot of money. The business was financially lucrative but was also high risk with high rewards, with that came the stress of working long days, and I learnt to cope by not only working hard but playing hard.
In addition to the demolitions business I had other interests in retail, communications, property, business support, IT and training. I was and still am an entrepreneur at heart.
Eventually the hard work took its toll and I learnt to cope by over eating, over drinking and often by being angry. Over the years I put weight on and drank more then was healthy for anyone. It got to the point where I knew if I didn’t change my ways I probably wouldn’t be around for much longer, I also knew that despite the hard earned financial success I wasn’t happy, I knew there had to be more but had no idea where to find it.
For years I had been interested in personal development, my entrepreneurial interests meant I was constantly looking for ways to do things quicker, easier or better. In contracting situations and in business generally the ability to turn ideas into actions and create results is essential for success. My studies of how to do “better” lead me beyond the study of management to the study of personal development. That is how I came to find out about the three modalities, which I soon realized, made a huge difference to people’s lives, NLP, Coaching and Hypnosis.
As a young man in the early 80’s I did a hypnosis course out of pure interest and I was fascinated by the self-help classics of Norman Vincent Peale, Zig ZIglar, Marcus Aurelius. Then in 2000 I had an experience, which totally changed my life. I had already read “Awaken the Giant Within” by Tony Robbins when I saw him on a TV show; it led me to re- read the book, however this time there was a difference. In the book Tony invites you to “stop reading and do the exercises” the second time of reading I did just that and my whole life changed. I clearly remember the moment when I learnt a powerful distinction, which I ensure all my students learn and remember, which is “the difference between knowing something intellectually and knowing it experientially.” I did the exercises in the book and things were different in a way they never had been before.
I was obsessed about learning more of what Tony called Neuro Associative Conditioning, which is his name for NLP Neuro linguistic Programming so I began a learning journey and studied and trained in NLP and Hypnosis.
It was between 2000 and 2002 that I used the techniques learnt to change my life in many ways, I stopped drinking which was a relief to my family and to one of my business interests, I owned a wine bar and restaurant and one year had a £15,000 bar tab. I changed my eating and exercise habits and went from 20 stone down to 14 stones in just over 6 months. At the same time my attitude towards business totally changed, at one point I had nearly 300 people working for me I was stressed and out of control so I took total responsibility for my experiences and choices, I cut back on what I was doing. I sold off business interests and focused on a business, which I loved and enjoyed which was the development of my Business Centre with its “IT” and training services. Using the techniques I had learnt I developed and created an idea within the training industry, which within 6 months took a fledgling company to a £4.5 million profit. As you can probably imagine I was blown away by how the approaches of NLP, Hypnosis and Coaching had so quickly transformed my life.
That was it I was hooked, I left my business interests and took a few years to travel, study and practice with the best in the world. If I was going to be one of the best coaches in the word then I wanted to have been trained by the best.
It was during this time that I met Paul McKenna, Paul ran a training company and worked with the co-creator of NLP Dr Richard Bandler, I had already done some training with the other co-creator John Grinder but it was when I attended an NLP practitioner with Paul and Richard that I realised just how incredible and skilful they were and I recall thinking “One day I want to be able to do what they do.”
Having been studying and practising NLP, Coaching and Hypnosis for a few years my approach stood out and I was invited to assist Paul on his early trainings. This included spending evenings in London theatres while Paul did his hypnotic stage shows assisting from amongst the audience to ensure people not only stayed in trances but they weren’t played about with by other audience members and also they were entertaining. As part of my training I have studied and practised stage hypnosis but this is not what my work is about, although my training is entertaining I regard it as a tool to educate rather then as a means to an end in itself.
During those years I literally worked with dozens of people a week seeing clients from 8 am till 10 pm 7 days a week, I helped out on nearly 4 months of almost back to back trainings one year just to get more experience and I began to run group workshops so I could have more chance to work with people. It was over this time that I developed my own unique coaching style which has proven to be not only very successful with individuals and groups but in the corporate business world also.
My style has been described as edgy, dynamic even provocative but always fun, it gets results quickly and effectively and in ways that become natural and sustainable
In 2004 I was asked by Paul to run his assisting team for a hypnosis training he was running and then in 2005 Paul and Dr Bandler invited me to co run his team with my ex business and training partner Tina Taylor. Since first working with Paul I have assisted in training over 50,000 people to learn NLP and Hypnosis and with my own training company Aventesi. Tina and I have trained 100’s of people to become coaches, therapists and consultants of change.
In recent years I have worked with author and celebrity coach Michael Neill who used to co-present with Paul and have been part of Michaels Supercoach Academy faculty, which trains coaches in New York and Los Angeles.
Since 2002 I have worked and trained in 3 continents and I have been privileged to coach Olympic athletes, world champions, champions in football, tennis, rugby, equestrian sports, darts, I have coached celebrities that are house hold legends and multi millionaire business gurus, I have also worked with groups of children with ADHD, with epileptic and Turettes sufferers. I have coached people with pain management, memory improvement, and I’ve worked with groups of people who have been victims of rape and abuse and with people suffering from drug and alcohol addictions. No problem was ever off limits.
My work had enabled me to coach and train with some of the world’s largest organizations. I have made numerous TV and radio appearances and did a series of Phobia cures for the Paul O’Grady show and was invited to be the “fear specialist” for the release of the Stephen King film IT and for the scary 3D film Coraline.

The real pleasure of this business is that we have no idea yet of the limits of the human mind to change itself. We do not know what’s impossible.
I hope by giving you a brief insight into my story and my own personal journey of self-development and self-actualization that you will be heartened to know that if I can make such personal and professional changes then so can anyone else. What we are able to achieve with a combinaton of NLP, hypnosis and coaching is not magic although it does have magical results.
I have shared a few of my beliefs but here is one to finish off which I hope will assist you on your journey through life.
I believe that humans are not broken or ill or damaged and that we are all intrinsically OK.
It’s when we really begin to understand how we think we can make seemingly miraculous changes in an instant, sometimes it just takes a while to get to that instant.
I sincerely hope that I have created something on this site that will assist you with your own incredible journey and I hope that we get the chance to meet in the future and share stories.
Until then, have an incredible life
It all starts by having a conversation.
